This year’s Super Bowl is a big moment for the NFL

Yes, it is the Super Bowl, an NFL champion will be crowned, but that is not the biggest thing at stake. The NFL is the biggest sports draw in the country, it is wildly successful, but, the popularity of the NFL took some hits this season. Some of those hits were self-inflicted. Referees that do not know the rules, and make obviously bad calls seemingly every game. A continued campaign to stamp out the fun in the game with silly penalties, and of course “Deflategate” which drug on and on and on. But the biggest hit was the players who took a knee during the national anthem during too many games. That, together with the sports media injecting “social justice” into much of its reporting hurt the NFL. The message to players was they needed to speak out, get involved. Well, as long as they spoke out on the “correct side” of course.

Certainly NFL fans consist of a broad spectrum of ideological views. But the NFL put a thumb in the eye of Conservative fans, and any other fan that might actually just want to watch the game free of ideology. Football fans do not watch games to be sermonized, or talked at. They watch because they enjoy the game. And this years Super Bowl will tell us how much respect the NFL has for its fans. And the halftime show, featuring Lady Gaga will show how non-political the NFL wants to be.

If we go back to last year’s halftime performance with Beyonce, we recall how very political she got, with the NFL’s blessing. Her song “Formation” was anti-cop, and pro Black Panthers. And that performance rubbed many the wrong way. Now, this year Lady Gaga has been asked by the NFL to not get political. Such a request is the right move, but, if that request was given with a wink and a nod……….

Gaga held a press conference on Thursday in Houston. During the Q&A session, a reporter asked Gaga, “I know you spoke about kinda taking this moment to unify America a little bit. Are you going to do that at all? Are you going to make any kind of statements during the performance?”

The pop star responded, “Well, I don’t know if I will succeed in unifying America. You’ll have to ask America when it’s over. But the only statements that I’ll be making during the halftime show are the ones that I’ve been consistently making throughout my career.

“I believe in a passion for inclusion. I believe in the spirit of equality, and the spirit of this country as one of love and compassion and kindness. So my performance will have both those philosophies.”

Well, that is not the best sign for anyone hoping to have a politics-free Super Bowl is it? Gaga has a history of making very political statements, and when liberals start throwing words like equality around, well, we know where that usually leads. It leads to a Liberal preaching to us, usually about things they are vastly misinformed about. And we have seen this year the NBA cave in to a noted social justice warrior

So, we will wait, until tomorrow. We will root for the Pats, or the Falcons, or maybe against one of those teams, we will hope that maybe advertisers will bring us some funny spots, like they used to before they were bitten by the “do not offend anyone” bug, and we will watch Lady Gaga to see if the NFL gets it or not. We will see if lower ratings this season woke the NFL up. We will see if the NFL execs are bright enough to realize that left wing activism during the Super Bowl is not a way to keep its fans. This should seem obvious but, Liberals are blind to the fact that not everyone agrees with them.

So, all there is to add is Go Falcons, and Lady Gaga, just sing!

Ed Thinks Up A Way To Improve The NFL Post-Season – A JV Super Bowl

Although I have essentially boycotted the NFL this season – due to the fact that it has become a politically correct nightmare in recent years – I am hopeful that one day the people who run it will regain their senses and begin acting like real men again. Should that happen, I have devised a little scheme that I believe could help to enhance the professional football fan’s post-season experience.

First of all, get rid of the Pro Bowl altogether. It is, and has always been, a completely pointless game that people only watch out of sheer boredom, so just END IT already!

Secondly, replace it with a game between two actual NFL teams – not a one-time collection of individual super stars – that can be incentivized to play the game as if it wasn’t some sort of half-assed practice scrimmage.

Here’s how my plan works:

Take the two best, non-playoff teams from both the AFC and NFC respectively – four teams total – and pit them against each other in two initial “bowl games” during the post-season.

Example: this year’s contestants would be the Houston Texans, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the San Francisco 49ers.

The AFC’s bowl game could be named for the best coach that the conference has ever produced, Chuck Noll, while the NFC’s could be named for its greatest coach, Vince Lombardi.

The winners of these two games would then play each other in a sort of JV version of the Super Bowl. It could be named after the place where America’s first wholly professional football game was played, Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

So how would this work exactly?

Well, the first two games could be played on the Monday and Tuesday nights immediately following the league’s divisional playoff games.

The “Latrobe Bowl” could be played two weeks later on the Sunday between the conference championships and the Super Bowl.

The incetives to win this game could be A.) player bonuses equal to – say – half those of the Super Bowl champions, and B.) an additional first round pick in the following college draft for the team’s general manager. Oh, and C.) the coach could get a nice trophy for his display case.

The losers could get free bus tickets home… and maybe some Arby’s gift certificates.

And that’s it! That’s my brief outline for improving the NFL post-season picture.

Feel free to express your own thoughts on this subject in the comments section below.

Klavan: Conservatives are boobs when it comes to pop culture

He makes some great points. Points I think we ought to take to heart.

Now that we are descending into nanny-state soft tyranny under the sure and certain leadership of our beloved Not-A-Dictator, we are going to need a Minister of All Cultures and my nominee is John Nolte of Breitbart’s Big Hollywood. First of all, I know Nolte so even under the new regime, I should be able to score copies of movies with all the offensive scenes still intact. And second of all, I’m beginning to think that he is the last sane man discussing pop culture in America except for me. And I’m not too sure about me.

Last week, the Noltenator ran a terrific piece defending funny man Seth MacFarlane from both left-wing and right-wing attacks on his off-beat, politically incorrect and also very amusing Academy Awards performance. Especially under fire was a song called “We Saw Your Boobs,” which named which actresses had exposed themselves in which movies. Critics on left and right called the song sexist, offensive, puerile, etc, and Nolte explained to them: shut the hell up.

What strikes me as wrong-headed… is all this taking of offense and hurling of “ists.” I fear we’re becoming a nation of well-intentioned (sometimes) “Footloose” dads who see danger in harmless fun; where we cry “ist” to put a stop to things that make us uncomfortable; where — so “we don’t offend” and “for the good of others” – we build restrictions. And what happens in the process? We lose our own capacity for joy and that very healthy exercise known as laughing at ourselves.

Read the whole thing here. It’s worth it.

But while John takes both the left and the right to task, I think the right is more to blame here. When leftists attacked MacFarlane, they were being pinched, small-minded, puritanical, humorless, bullying, and censorious — which is to say, they were being themselves! Blaming them for that is like blaming a rattler for having venom.

But if right wingers want to speak through and about pop culture, they need to learn to be smarter and better than the opposition. The fact is, properly understood the “Boobs” song was a triumph for right-wing values!

Too often it seems some Conservatives try to trump the Left by adopting their tactics. Like playing the victim card. Look, we are Conservatives, we do not play the PC game very well, and we should not try. We are not by nature, whiners, nor should we try to be. No one likes anyone who is always feeling offended, or like they are part of a victim class. This is why certain “Socially Conservative” groups hack me off. It is bad enough to hear Liberals play the role of the victimized, hearing Conservatives do it is even more grating. Yes, I know, members of the American Family Association are offended by most things on TV. Fine, turn the channel if you do not like the show that offends you, don’t let your kids watch it, but stop trying to get the FCC to step in and  censor what you don’t like. Believe it or not not everyone wants everything to be “family-friendly”. I like drama, and thrillers, and comedies like Two and a Half Men, and shows like Bones, CSI, NCIS, and others that might not be suited for kids. I enjoy them, and do not really care if they offend you, nor should I care. Get the Hell over it! EVERYTHING that is written, spoken, broadcast or expressed offends someone, that is just the way it is, again GET OVER IT!

As I said already, I am well past tired of everyone crying about this show, or that song, or this or that offended them. Tell you what, go find the the right never to be offended, THEN we can talk, otherwise shut up already! Honestly folks, we have a president that is trashing this country. The economy, foreign policy, spending, taxes, the right to keep and bear arms, our military, Obamacare, all matter a LOT more than you getting your panties in a wad over Seth McFarlane singing a song about boobs, or some other comedian making a joke, or some show that you think portrayed Conservatives in a bad light, or OH MY GOD, Beyonce was too sexy at the Super Bowl. Good grief!

In fact, take the Oscars, I never watch them, or any other awards show. Why? Because they offend me, too much pretense, too much giving three of four movies, or singer, or TV show every award, too much song and dance, I LOATHE musicals, ALL musicals, always have, even when I was small. I used to watch shows with my parents or grandparents where there would be singing and dancing, and I would think, why are they singing and dancing? Yet, I have never ever held a desire to prevent someone else from watching these shows. Nor have I led any boycotts to rid TV of the reality show, which are so obnoxious to me. Want to know why? Because I do not think I am entitled, that is why.

I guess what I am saying is I am tired of every Liberal out there contracting Offendeditis at every turn. I am tired of the radical Atheists who freak every Christmas. I am tired of the race pimps at the NAACP, and MSNBS making everything about race. I am tired of the gender pimps AKA Feminists going ballistic at every turn too. I am tired of seeing the Boy Scouts attacked because they dare exercise their right to freedom of association. I am tired of Gay couples thinking they can force a florist or bakery to do business with them. Find another bakery! I am tired of the incessant whining. Everyone is entitled to never be offended somehow? And, I hate to say it but I see more and more Conservatives flirting with this same attitude. Sorry, but we are better than Liberals, we really ought to act like it.

Oh but of course, Super Bowl blackout was caused by…………..

…….Global warming! And the only solution? More government!

Forward on Climate: The Climate Cliff – Ed Markey, Daily Kos

For two years, the nightly news and the morning papers have been filled with scenes that look like they’re straight out of a blockbuster movie. Waves crashing over sea walls as stronger storms lash our coasts. Trees ablaze as wildfires scar our forests. Crops withering as unrelenting drought and heat parch our farms.

Climate disruption is costing American lives and livelihoods. In 2011 and 2012, America endured 25 weather disasters that totaled $1 billion or more in damages 2012 was the warmest year on record in the continental United States. We suffered the most widespread drought since the Dust Bowl, record wildfires that engulfed neighborhoods, and superstorm Sandy, which killed more than 100 people and could cost taxpayers  $60 billion. […]

I have also been fighting the GOP effort to build the Keystone Pipeline. Tar sands oil is some of the dirtiest crude oil on the planet, and the pipeline ends in a tax-free export zone in Port Arthur, Texas. Keystone XL would make American the middleman between the dirtiest oil on the plant and the thirstiest markets willing to burn it. Our country and our climate will assume all of the risk, and what we will get back is higher gas prices in the Midwest and more pollution in our atmosphere.

We also need to get smart about smart grid. It wasn’t Beyonce’s amazing performance that blew out the power during the Super Bowl, it was an aging energy infrastructure. If Thomas Edison was alive today he would recognize our current grid. No one should be in the dark about the necessity and the opportunity of building a new energy backbone.

Republicans don’t want to talk about climate change, but Mother Nature keeps interrupting their other conversations. It’s time to not just talk about the challenges that we face from climate change, but to do something about them.

Right now, we’re hanging off the climate cliff by our fingernails, with the weight of the fossil fuel lobby pulling us down.

Buffoon! I love how these climate change salesmen act as if forest fires and storms are new phenomenons somehow

So, the Beyonce halftime show is leading us straight to Hell and movie violence causes school shootings?

I keep hearing certain things from some fellow Conservatives that I just cannot agree with.

No, not opposition to abortion. Abortion on demand is a grotesque violation of the most basic human right.

No,  not their opposition to needless, and pointless new gun laws. The right to self-defense is also a basic human right that the left wishes to destroy, and disarming the people is the end game of the Left

Their desire to abide by our Constitution? Again no. The biggest problem in America is that we have stopped obeying the Constitution frankly

Their opposition to the runaway spending orgy this nation is on? No, the irresponsible fiscal policies, waste, fraud, and corruption is destroying our nation

Their outrage that freedom of religion is under assault by radical Atheists? Nope! They are right to push back against those miscreants, and frankly, we should push back even harder.

So what is left? Support of Israel? No, I am rock solid in supporting Israel. Any nation that attacks Israel should know that Israel will respond and that we will support Israel. Ad yes, if that means our military joins Israel in putting boots in asses then so be it!

Border security? No, the border security issue at a national security and national sovereignty issue. Without borders that are secured, we are at risk of eventually losing our national sovereignty.

No, the issue that drives me nutty at times is those Conservatives who wish to place blame for violence, criminal violence on movies, or video games. I will make my case in the simplest way possible. No normal person watches a movie, or plays a video game and then goes out and emulates the violence therein. Anyone who would is mentally ill, and could get the “idea” to commit a violent act from just about anything. We call crazy people crazy for a reason you know. Saying we should “crack down” on movies, or video games makes as much sense as cracking down on the right of law-abiding Americans to own guns, yes, Liberals, even guns that look scary.

Then there are those that seem to be too easily offended. take the Super Bowl halftime yesterday. Beyonce performed, and, while her music is not my favorite, I can appreciate her talent, what a voice, and her energy. I keep reading how “racy” her show was. Oh and did you SEE what she was wearing? So, in fairness I watched it again. And, I am sorry, but if you think that show was over the top, or slutty, or trashy, I just do not get it. I saw nothing overtly sexual, or distasteful. Maybe someone can explain to me what was so objectionable? Seriously, someone clear this up for me.

Reliapundit offers a different view

Pretty solid group, Parcells might be  stretch, but why no Tim Brown  or Andre reed?? Honestly? Who does not vote for Tim Brown or Andre Reed? Also how was Curley Culp not already in?

Getting in on his fourth try, Parcells led an induction class that also included mouthy defensive lineman Warren Sapp, prolific receiver Cris Carter and a pair of stalwarts from the trenches, offensive linemen Jonathan Ogden and Larry Allen.

The class of 2013 also included a pair of senior selections, Curley Culp and Dave Robinson. The announcement was made in New Orleans, site of Sunday’s Super Bowl.

Almost as noteworthy were the finalists who didn’t get in, including running back Jerome Bettis and owners Art Modell and Edward DeBartolo Jr. Players and coaches from the Baltimore Ravens, who will face the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl, spent all week lobbying for Modell, their former owner who died last year, to claim a place in the hall.

Congrats to all the inductees but again, I have to ask how does Tim Brown not get in? I mean he only had 1094 catches, 100 TD’s and  just under 15,000 yards! And he also posted 10 straight years of over 1,000 yards receiving!

Another snub was Jerome Bettis getting overlooked. 13,662 yards does not cut it  I guess?

Tiki Barber the walking definition of an asshole

After he retired from the the Giants, he ripped his former team mates, who promptly won a Super Bowl without him. Now he has taken despicability to a new low, cheating on his wife with a bimbo, leaving his wife her for a bimbo while his wife was eight months pregnant. What a prick! Way to treat your wife and kids Tiki. And, to be frank, his wife was a lot hotter than the bimbo skeleton he left her for

First the bimbo, who will one day dump Tiki for a younger, or richer guy
