St. Lucie election officials miss deadline to report recount totals in Murphy/West race, previous results to be certified

So, it looks like West is done, whether or not, they missed on purpose and he was screwed over I cannot say, but this sounds pretty sketchy. Via Weasel Zippers

Via NBC Miami:

Election officials missed a deadline Sunday to report results of a two-day recount in GOP Rep. Allen West’s race to remain in Congress, apparently sealing unofficial results giving the win to Democrat Patrick Murphy.

St. Lucie County did not meet a noon cutoff to finish processing 37,379 ballots cast early in the District 18 congressional election. Under Florida law, previously submitted results favoring Murphy will be certified unless an emergency exemption is granted by the state.

“They did this recount because they weren’t confident in the outcome,” said West campaign manager Tim Edson. “Now, because they missed the deadline, we’re not going to know whether they were right in their concern or not.”

Allen West loses bid for re-election, or does he?

1389 Blog has the scoop

Facing defeat, Florida Rep. Allen West on Wednesday demanded a recount in his bid for re-election against Democratic challenger Patrick Murphy.

With all precincts in the south Florida district reporting, Murphy has 160,328 votes, or 50.4 percent, to West’s 157,872 votes and 49.6 percent, according to the Associated Press, which has still not officially declared a winner.

In a statement Wednesday morning, the Republican congressman and Tea Party favorite’s campaign said the race was still far from over.

“This race is far from decided and there is no rush to declare an outcome,” the campaign said. “Ensuring a fair and accurate counting of all ballots is of the utmost importance. There are still tens of thousands of absentee ballots to be counted in Palm Beach County and potential provisional ballots across the district.”

The campaign went on to voice suspicions about the actions of one county election supervisor and called for a full hand recount.

“Late last night Congressman West maintained a district-wide lead of nearly 2,000 votes until the St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections ‘recounted’ thousands of early ballots,” the campaign said. “Following that ‘recount’ Congressman West trailed by 2,400 votes.”

The campaign said there were “numerous other disturbing regularities” reported at polls across the county, including “doors to polling places being locked when the polls closed” — a violation of Florida law because it prevents the public from being able to witness how results are tabulated.

Democrat Patrick Murphy’s Campaign Linked To Fictitious Voter Office Scandal – National Review

Last week, it came to light that voters in southeastern Pennsylvania’s 8th district were receiving notices warning that their right to vote could be in jeopardy if they did not return an absentee ballot to the “Pennsylvania Voter Assistance Office,” a fictitious agency headquartered at a post office box. The letters, shown below, were underwritten by the Pennsylvania Democratic State Committee.

“By failing to return the enclosed [absentee ballot],” warned the notice, “you may be placing your ability to participate in this year’s general election at risk.” The mailer contained a postage-paid envelope instructing voters to return their ballots to a post office box controlled by the Democratic Party.

That post office box, Battle ’10 has learned, was controlled at least in part by Tim Persico, the campaign manager for Rep. Patrick Murphy. Persico was apparently listed as one of two authorized to access the post office box listed in the mailers.

The Pennsylvania GOP has released a photograph of the access list bearing Persico’s name, available here. The photograph was taken yesterday, Oct. 26, in Bristol, Pa.

At issue is whether Rep. Patrick Murphy was directly involved with the absentee ballot scheme, which is being investigated by the local district attorney’s office and has so far resulted in the rejection of at least 600 absentee ballots for “defects.”

The number of reject ballots, which is “significantly higher” than in previous years, has been reportedly fueled by errors including mismatching signatures and incorrect birth dates, indicators of potential fraud.

This comes on the heels of the county Board of Elections recording a unusual spike in Democratic absentee ballot application last week. Within a six day period from Oct. 14 to 19, Democrat absentee ballot applications to the county increased by 67 percent as compared to Republican applications, a spike that occurred nowhere else in the state.

Applications had been running essentially even between the parties up to that point. On Oct. 14, both parties’ ballot applications tallied roughly 3,000 each, but by Oct. 19, Democrats recorded 5,082 applications to Republicans’ 3,678.

Patricia Poprik, vice chairman of the local Republican Party, has been monitoring the return of applications and spoke with Battle ’10 about the controversy. Poprik spoke of witnessing identical, pre-labelled envelopes returned with applications, some dated months prior, and voiced her fear about the lack of transparency behind the fictitious Democrat “Voter Assistance Office.”

“We know some were held, and some were signed in August,” Poprik told Battle ’10. “The biggest question is: whether they [the applications, both Democrat and Republican] were all sent back to the county.”

“Why do the [Democrats] pre-screen them?” asked Poprik. “If they really wanted to help the voter, why don’t they just put the return address of the courthouse [and] let the ballot go there? Why do they have to get in the middle and check it out?”

That the letters instruct applications be returned to the Democratic Party via the Murphy-campaign manager controlled post office box, rather than directly to the county Board of Elections office, is a core aspect of the ongoing controversy.

The 8th congressional district is viewed as a bellwether race. Patrick Murphy is seen as a rising star in his party, and as a recent appointee to the powerful appropriations committee, his loss would be a significant blow for Democrats.
