As A Reaction To Obama’s Iran Deal, Saudis Trying To Buy Nuclear Bombs From Pakistan

Saudi Arabia To Buy Nuclear Bombs From Pakistan: Report – New York Post

Saudi Arabia will join the nuclear club by buying “off the shelf” atomic weapons from Pakistan, U.S. officials told a London newspaper.

The Saudis – who financed much of Pakistan’s nuke program – are fearful of international efforts to keep its enemy Iran from acquiring a bomb, the Sunday Times of London reports. The Saudis think the deal, backed by President Obama, will actually accelerate Iran’s nuke push.

Saudi Arabia has talked for years about acquiring a bomb from the Pakistanis. “The House of Saud has now made the strategic decision to move forward,” a former U.S. defense official said.

Governor Perry Claims Record Number Of Illegals From Syria, Pakistan And Afghanistan Being Caught At Border

Rick Perry: Record Number Of Illegals From Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan Being Caught At Border – Big Government

Texas Governor Rick Perry said a record number of illegal immigrants from Syria, Pakistan and Afghanistan have been apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border.

On Sunday’s State of the Union on CNN, Perry said the “historic record highs” of individuals from “countries that have substantial terrorist ties” threaten America’s national security.

Later on the program, Rep. Mike McCaul (R-TX), the House Homeland Security Committee Chair, said Iranian terrorists have had plans to sneak across the border. He also said that others who want to do harm are seeking to exploit America’s porous border.

Perry also said that since 2008, 203,000 illegal immigrants have been put in Texas’ jails, and those illegal immigrants “have been responsible for 3,000 homicides and almost 8,000 sexual assaults.”

“I wish the President would respect that desire of Texans and the citizens of this country to secure the border,” Perry said. “That’s the real issue here—and one that all too often gets deflected by the conversation about unaccompanied minor children.”

Saudi Nuclear Weapons ‘On Order’ From Pakistan

Saudi Nuclear Weapons ‘On Order’ From Pakistan – BBC

Saudi Arabia has invested in Pakistani nuclear weapons projects, and believes it could obtain atomic bombs at will, a variety of sources have told BBC Newsnight.

While the kingdom’s quest has often been set in the context of countering Iran’s atomic programme, it is now possible that the Saudis might be able to deploy such devices more quickly than the Islamic republic.

Earlier this year, a senior Nato decision maker told me that he had seen intelligence reporting that nuclear weapons made in Pakistan on behalf of Saudi Arabia are now sitting ready for delivery.

Last month Amos Yadlin, a former head of Israeli military intelligence, told a conference in Sweden that if Iran got the bomb, “the Saudis will not wait one month. They already paid for the bomb, they will go to Pakistan and bring what they need to bring.”

Since 2009, when King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia warned visiting US special envoy to the Middle East Dennis Ross that if Iran crossed the threshold, “we will get nuclear weapons”, the kingdom has sent the Americans numerous signals of its intentions.

Gary Samore, until March 2013 President Barack Obama’s counter-proliferation adviser, has told Newsnight:

“I do think that the Saudis believe that they have some understanding with Pakistan that, in extremis, they would have claim to acquire nuclear weapons from Pakistan.”

The story of Saudi Arabia’s project – including the acquisition of missiles capable of delivering nuclear warheads over long ranges – goes back decades.

In the late 1980s they secretly bought dozens of CSS-2 ballistic missiles from China.

These rockets, considered by many experts too inaccurate for use as conventional weapons, were deployed 20 years ago.

This summer experts at defence publishers Jane’s reported the completion of a new Saudi CSS-2 base with missile launch rails aligned with Israel and Iran.

It has also been clear for many years that Saudi Arabia has given generous financial assistance to Pakistan’s defence sector, including, western experts allege, to its missile and nuclear labs.

Visits by the then Saudi defence minister Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz al Saud to the Pakistani nuclear research centre in 1999 and 2002 underlined the closeness of the defence relationship.

It Figures… Obama Praises Pakistan For Electing Islamic Extremist

Obama Praises Pakistan For Electing Extremist – Sweetness & Light

From the Politico:

Obama congratulates Pakistan on elections

By DONOVAN SLACK | May 12, 2013

President Obama congratulated the people of Pakistan on national elections Saturday that marked the country’s first democratic transfer of power.

“I congratulate the people of Pakistan on the successful completion of yesterday’s parliamentary elections,” Obama said in a statement. “The United States stands with all Pakistanis in welcoming this historic peaceful and transparent transfer of civilian power, which is a significant milestone in Pakistan’s democratic progress. By conducting competitive campaigns, freely exercising your democratic rights, and persevering despite intimidation by violent extremists, you have affirmed a commitment to democratic rule that will be critical to achieving peace and prosperity for all Pakistanis for years to come.”

Early tallies suggested former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif could be headed back to power as leader of a coalition government…

Who is former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, you ask? Well, he is a Muslim extremist, who also helped to give us the Taliban in Afghanistan in the first place.

Lest we forget, back when he was running for the US, Obama said that he would send missiles into Pakistan if if he thought radical Muslims might get a hold of their nuclear weapons. Then later, in August 2007, when he was running for President, Obama vowed that he would send ground troops into Pakistan if they did not do more to stop their support for terrorists.

But now, when Pakistan has elected a radical Muslim who has helped the Taliban in the past, Obama just congratulates them.

From the Associated Press:

Pakistan’s next premier an Islamist comeback kid

By SEBASTIAN ABBOT | May 13, 2013

ISLAMABAD (AP) – The man set to become Pakistan’s next prime minister after historic elections over the weekend could be called the Islamist comeback kid.

Nawaz Sharif has held the job twice before… After serving as the country’s main opposition leader, Sharif came roaring back in Saturday’s elections, in which his Pakistan Muslim League-N party scored a resounding victory…

Critics worry that Sharif, who is known to be personally very religious, is soft on Islamic extremism and won’t crack down on militants that pose a serious threat to Pakistan and other countries – chief among them the Taliban and al-Qaida-linked groups…

Sharif [had] intended to run in the 2008 election, but he was disqualified by a court because of a conviction on terrorism and hijacking charges, stemming from Musharraf’s coup. Sharif insisted the conviction was politically motivated, and it was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2009.

Uh huh.

Sharif… is perhaps best known for testing nuclear weapons in response to India’s nuclear test in 1998…

And, of course, Pakistan now has quite a few nuclear warheads, which will now be under the control of a Muslim extremist.

Sharif’s party, which controlled the Punjab government for the last five years, is more closely aligned with hard-line Islamist parties than the outgoing Pakistan People’s Party. The Pakistan Muslim League-N has been criticized for not going after militant outfits in Punjab, a stance analysts said was driven by its reliance on banned militant groups to deliver key votes.

During Sharif’s tenure as prime minister in the 1990s, he not only supported the Taliban regime in Afghanistan but also tried to vastly increase the powers of his office while pushing aside Pakistan’s penal code in favor of an Islamic justice system. Many saw these ill-fated moves as an attempt to “Talibanize” Pakistan, and they eroded his popularity.

But not enough that he wasn’t just, in effect, re-elected.

After returning from exile, Sharif admitted that the pro-Afghan Taliban policy he pursued when he was prime minister in the 1990s was a failure and said Pakistan should stop trying to influence affairs in Afghanistan…

And we believe him, too.

Sharif has criticized unpopular U.S. drone attacks targeting al-Qaida and Taliban militants in Pakistan, and has called the Afghan conflict “America’s war.” The Punjab government, controlled by Sharif’s party, turned down over $100 million in American aid in 2011 to protest the bin Laden raid…

And yet Obama is congratulating Pakistan for electing this man. And this is the man the Obama administration is now counting on to help us stop terrorism in Afghanistan and help us negotiate with the Taliban.

In fact, looking at the big picture, the tragic deaths of the four Americans in Benghazi should be viewed as a consequence of the bigger scandal of what is happening in the Middle East, where country after country is being taken over by radical Muslims. And which Obama is encouraging, via the ‘Arab Spring’ and other policies.

We are losing the entire Middle East to Islamic extremism. And yet our news media are pretending Obama has nothing to do with it.

Religion Of Peace Update: Rampaging Muslims Loot, Torch 240 Christian Homes And Businesses In Pakistan (Video)

Mob Wreaks Havoc In Christian Town – Daily Times

Hundreds of angry protesters turned into arsonists, attacking around 160 houses and 80 shops of Christians on Saturday, just a day after allegations of blasphemy were levelled against a man in the Badami Bagh area.

Several policemen, including SSP (Operations) Suhail Sukhera and the Badami Bagh SHO received multiple injuries when the angry mob pelted stones on them during a clash.

The Saint Joseph Colony and its surrounding areas turned into a battlefield when angry protesters started torching the houses and shops.

Upon being informed about the incident, police contingents and rescue teams reached the spot and tried to control the situation.

According to witnesses, the mob broke into the houses, looted them and burnt the remaining belongings in the streets. They said that on Friday, a large number of protesters forced the Christian community members to flee the area, leaving behind their homes and possessions unprotected. They said that the mob had gathered around St Joseph Colony on Noor Road at around 10am, led by a man named Shafiq Ahmed, who was in search of the accused, Sawan, alias Bubby.

They said that the mob first attacked Sawan’s house, setting it on fire and pelting it with stones, and then attacked other houses of the colony.

Badami Bagh SHO Hafiz Abdul Majid told Daily Times that police had controlled the situation after hours of struggle. He said that 12 policemen, including the SSP (operations), had also been injured in the attack. He said that the police had obtained the footage of the incident, and people involved in the incident were being identified.

He assured that stern action would be taken against the arsonists. However, the police had not registered a case until the filing of this report. Witnesses Majid, Iqbal, Afzal and others told Daily Times that tension began when a local Christian, Sawan, was accused of uttering blasphemous remarks three days ago. They said that the accused and complainant Shahid Imran, also a resident of Badami Bagh, were best friend and used to drink together. They said that they had quarrelled under influence of alcohol over some minor issue two days ago. The next day, Shahid Imran accused Sawan of using derogatory remarks for Prophet Muhammad (PUBH) and approached the Badami Bagh police for registration of a case against Sawan, his wife Bilo and daughters Elizabeth, Nusrat and Bushra.

The police had registered a case against Sawan and booked him under Section 295-C.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf showed deep concern over the arson attack in Lahore and issued directions for an expeditious inquiry into the incident. President Zardari also took notice of the incident and called for a report in this regard.

Why would anyone say that Western Culture is better than others?

Well Consider this story from Pakistan

Five female health workers involved in administering the polio vaccine were murdered in Pakistan this week.

CS Monitor reported:

Five female health workers involved in Pakistan’s polio eradication efforts were gunned down Tuesday in two of the country’s main cities amid militant resistance to immunization campaigns.

Unidentified gunmen killed four of the women in Karachi and a fifth in Peshawar. Two male volunteers were also injured in Tuesday’s attacks, according to Sindh’s health department. As a result, an ongoing polio vaccination campaign has been suspended throughout Sindh Province, according to the department.

Tuesday’s violence highlights a new trend of deadly attacks targeting women, who had previously been avoided unless they were members of religious minorities, says Jameel Yusuf, the former head of Karachi’s Citizens-Police Liaison Committee.

Earlier this year the Taliban shot a UN Polio doctor and his driver in Karachi.

Backasswards. Shooting people trying to prevent the spread of preventable diseases? Shooting school girls for getting educations? Yet, some still play the moral relativism game with Sharia Law and radical Islam? Shameful!

Senior al-Qaida official killed by bad breakfast, CIA Drone strike

Mostly the CIA Drone though

Via NBC News:

A senior al-Qaida official and potential successor to the group’s leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed Friday morning in a Predator drone strike, according to reports on jihadi web forums and U.S. officials.

Sheikh Khalid Bin Abdul Rehman Al-Hussainan, aka Abu-Zaid al Kuwaiti, was killed in Pakistan while eating breakfast, according to the accounts. The 46-year-old cleric was seen as part of the “very top tier” of al-Qaida’s remaining leaders in the wake of the death of Osama bin Laden, according to one expert on the terror group.

The news was first announced on an al-Qaida web forum early Friday. “We celebrate to you the news of the martyrdom of the working scholar Shaykh Khalid al-Hussainan (Abu Zaid al-Kuwaiti) while eating his Suhoor (dawn time) meal, and we ask Allah to accept him in paradise,” a post said.

Pakistani Rioter Dies From Inhaling Burning American Flag Smoke – Townhall

If you don’t believe in karma, you might now. During a riot held by Islamists in Pakistan over the weekend, one participant was sent to the hospital after too much American flag burning. He later died.

Around 10,000 people participated in the main rally organised on The Mall by the Tehreek Hurmat-i-Rasool (THR). The participants marched from Nila Gumbad to Masjid-i-Shuhada on The Mall. Despite a ban on rallies on The Mall, the road remained blocked for vehicular traffic from noon to 6pm.

The rally was addressed by Jamatud Dawa chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, THR head Ameer Hamza, JD leader Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki, Pakistan Muslim League (Zia) head Ijazul Haq, Jamaat Ulema Islam-Sami (JUI-S) leader Asim Makhdoom and Jamaat Ahle Hadith ameer Hafiz Abdul Ghaffar Ropari.

One of the participants of the rally, Abdullah Ismail, passed away after he was taken to Mayo Hospital. Witnesses said he had complained of feeling unwell from the smoke from US flags burnt at the rally.

Ron Paul Denies Saying He Wouldn’t Have Ordered Bin Laden Raid In Pakistan… But Here’s The Video – The Blaze

Last night’s GOP debate in South Carolina may be one that causes Ron Paul serious problems in the “honesty” department.

Mr. Paul’s truthfulness is being questioned after he told Fox News’ Brett Baier that he never said that he would not have given the order to go into Pakistan and kill Osama bin Laden.

There’s just one small problem with Paul’s denial, he did say it, several times.

Back in May of 2011, and featured here on The Blaze, Ron Paul said three times in a two minute discussion of the topic, that as President of the United States, he would not have ordered bin Laden killed in the manner that President Obama did.

Simon Conway was quite clear in his questions, first asking;

So President Ron Paul would therefore not have ordered the kill of bin Laden, which could have only have taken place by entering another sovereign nation?

And Dr. Paul was equally clear in his response:

I don’t think it was necessary. No.

Less than a minute later, Conway attempted to further clarify by again asking the congressman.

So President Ron Paul would not have ordered the kill of bin Laden, to take place, as it took place in Pakistan?

Ron Paul’s response was consistent with his two previous answers.

Not the way it took place, no. I mean he was unarmed, you know… and all these other arguments.

Watch the two minute excerpt as Simon Conway of WHO Radio in Iowa repeatedly asks the Texas Congressman whether he would have given the order to kill Osama bin Laden.

That clip from WHO Newsradio 1040 appeared on The Blaze on May 11th.

Your Marxist Moron of the Day is

A NY Times columnist that clearly has no grasp about what Conservatism, the Tea Party, our out Founding Fathers were about

With Tea Party conservatives and many Republicans balking at raising the debt ceiling, let me offer them an example of a nation that lives up to their ideals.

It has among the lowest tax burdens of any major country: fewer than 2 percent of the people pay any taxes. Government is limited, so that burdensome regulations never kill jobs.

This society embraces traditional religious values and a conservative sensibility. Nobody minds school prayer, same-sex marriage isn’t imaginable, and criminals are never coddled.

The budget priority is a strong military, the nation’s most respected institution. When generals decide on a policy for, say, Afghanistan, politicians defer to them. Citizens are deeply patriotic, and nobody burns flags.

So what is this Republican Eden, this Utopia? Why, it’s Pakistan.

Now obviously Sarah Palin and John Boehner don’t intend to turn Washington into Islamabad-on-the-Potomac. And they are right that long-term budget issues do need to be addressed. But when many Republicans insist on “starving the beast” of government, cutting taxes, regulations and social services — slashing everything but the military — well, those are steps toward Pakistan.

What an ignorant ass! Talk about going off on a tangent, good grief!

Taliban Suicide Bombers Kill 80 In Pakistan To Avenge Bin Laden

Taliban Suicide Bombers Kill 80 In Pakistan To Avenge Bin Laden – Associated Press

A pair of Taliban suicide bombers attacked paramilitary police recruits eagerly heading home for a break after months of training, killing 80 people Friday in the first act of retaliation for the U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

In claiming responsibility, the al-Qaida linked militant group cited anger at Pakistan’s military for failing to stop the American incursion on their soil.

The blasts in the northwest were a reminder of the savagery of Islamist insurgents in Pakistan. Tensions also have risen between the U.S. and Islamabad over allegations that some elements of Pakistani security forces had been harboring bin Laden, who died in a May 2 raid in Abbottabad, a garrison town about three hours’ drive from the scene of the bombing.

“We have done this to avenge the Abbottabad incident,” Ahsanullah Ahsan, a spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban, told The Associated Press in a phone call. He warned that the group was also planning attacks on Americans living inside Pakistan.

The bombers blew themselves up in Shabqadar at the main gate of the facility for the Frontier Constabulary, a poorly equipped but front-line force in the battle against al-Qaida and allied Islamist groups like the Pakistani Taliban close to the Afghan border. Like other branches of Pakistan’s security forces, it has received U.S. funding to try to sharpen its skills.

At least 80 people were killed, including 66 recruits, and around 120 people were wounded, said police officer Liaqat Ali Khan.

Around 900 young men were leaving the center after spending six months of training there. They were in high spirits and looking forward to seeing their families, for which some had brought gifts, a survivor said.

Some people were sitting inside public minivans and others were loading luggage atop the vehicles when the bombers struck, witnesses said.

“We were heading toward a van when the first blast took place and we fell on the ground and then there was another blast,” said 21-year-old Rehmanullah Khan. “We enjoyed our time together, all the good and bad weather and I cannot forget the cries of my friends before they died.”

The scene was littered with shards of glass mixed with blood and flesh. The explosions destroyed at least 10 vans.

It was the first major militant attack in Pakistan since bin Laden’s death on May 2, and the deadliest this year.

Militants had pledged to avenge the killing and launch reprisal strikes in Pakistan.

The Taliban spokesman suggested the attack was aimed as punishment against Pakistani authorities for failing to stop the unilateral U.S. raid that killed bin Laden, something that has sparked popular nationalist and Islamist anger.

“The Pakistani army has failed to protect its land,” Ahsan said.

In its communications, the Taliban often tries to tap into popular sentiments in the country, where anti-Americanism is often stronger than feelings against Islamist militants. This is despite militant attacks over the last four years claiming the lives of many hundreds, if not thousands, of civilians.

Some 350 lawyers sympathetic with Islamists attended special prayers for bin Laden on the premises of the provincial high court in the eastern city of Lahore on Friday. The lawyers cursed the May 2 raid, chanting “Down with America.”

The explosive vests used in Friday’s attacks were packed with ball bearings and nails, police said.

Police official Nisar Khan said a suicide bomber in his late teens or early 20s set off one of the blasts.

“The first blast occurred in the middle of the road, and after that there was a huge blast that was more powerful than the first,” said Abdul Wahid, a 25-year-old recruit whose legs were wounded in the blasts.

Bin Laden, the Sept. 11 mastermind, and at least four others were killed by U.S. Navy SEALs who raided his compound in Abbottabad. Bin Laden is believed to have lived in the large house for up to six years.

Pakistani officials have denied knowing he was there but criticized the U.S. raid ordered by President Barack Obama as a violation of their country’s sovereignty. To counter allegations that Pakistan harbored bin Laden, the officials point out that thousands of Pakistani citizens, and up to 3,000 of its security forces, have died in suicide and other attacks since Sept. 11, 2001, when Islamabad became an ally of the U.S. in taking on Islamist extremists.

Many of the attacks have targeted Pakistani security forces, but government buildings, religious minorities and Western targets also have been hit.

Pakistan’s intelligence chief, Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha, admitted “negligence” on the part of authorities in failing to find bin Laden during a closed session in Parliament on Friday, a government spokeswoman told reporters. Military officials, including the powerful army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, said they would improve the country’s air defenses, which did not detect the high-tech U.S. choppers used in the raid.

The military leaders also assured lawmakers that Pakistan’s nuclear arsenals are safe and that the armed forces were capable of defending the country, said Firdous Ashiq Awan, the federal information minister.

In another development Friday, Pakistani intelligence officials said a U.S. missile strike killed three people near the Afghan border.

The four missiles struck a vehicle in the Doga Madakhel village of North Waziristan tribal region. North Waziristan is home to many militant groups dedicated to attacking Western troops in Afghanistan.

The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to media. They did not know the identities of the dead.

Also in the northwest Friday, some two dozen vehicles, including 15 tankers carrying fuel for NATO in Afghanistan, were destroyed when a blast ripped through a parking lot in Pakistan’s Khyber tribal region, government official Tahir Khan said.

The U.S. and NATO rely heavily on Pakistani land routes to transport large amounts of non-lethal supplies into Afghanistan. Militants and ordinary criminals have often attacked the supply line, but NATO and the U.S. say the attacks have not impacted the war effort. Still, the military alliance is increasingly using other roads into Afghanistan, including those coming from Central Asia.

Turns out OBL wasn’t so tough after all

Old Osama died like a gutless coward, which just suits swine like him.

There was always talk that bin Laden would have his guards kill him or kill himself before the filthy infidels could kill or capture him. He certainly had plenty of time to do it once the raid started it. Well turns out Mr. Tough Guy who had no problem killing or sending others to their death wasn’t so tough after all.

Sources involved in the operation that took down Usama bin Laden told Fox News the terrorist leader acted “scared” and “completely confused” in his final moments, “shoving his wife” at the Navy SEAL who ultimately shot him.The information helps clarify the conflicting details about what exactly happened toward the end of the 40-minute raid on bin Laden’s northern Pakistan compound. Sources who were part of the mission said bin Laden acted in a “cowardly manner” when confronted.

If there’s video of this it needs to be released. Now. Let the cannon fodder of the Islamic world see what there leader is like when confronted not with the idea of killing unarmed civilians but warriors. I like to think the bastard shit his pants.

What a great idea, I do believe the Arab world understands, and to a degree respects strength. So, show them what Osama did when face to face with a Navy Seal. Of course, Navy Seals are the baddest dudes there are, let’s face it. Fact is that when the Seals come for you, you are pretty much SOL but Osama died like a little bitch, which really suits him.

Further proof that no matter what you do, someone will whine about it

Anger Overflows On Drilling Halt Report – Washington Times

Gulf State lawmakers are accusing the Obama administration of putting politics above science after a government watchdog said Interior Department officials misled the public by altering a report to suggest that a group of outside scientists supported a blanket ban on deepwater drilling.

The administration maintains that the flap is the result of rushed editing and nothing more. However, members of Congress from the Gulf region, already incensed over what they described as a heavy-handed, one-size-fits-all reaction to the BP oil spill, are crying foul.

“This was not an accident at all. It was a deliberate attempt to use the prestige of the scientists to support their political decision,” said Rep. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, one of several Republicans who this summer requested an investigation into the moratorium by the Interior Department’s inspector general.

Mr. Cassidy, who said the IG’s conclusions will come as “bitter news” to about 12,000 workers who lost their jobs because of the moratorium, noted that the administration ignored later arguments by five of the panel’s seven scientists in favor of targeted inspections over a blanket ban – something he said violated Mr. Obama’s vow to let science, and not politics, guide his policies.

The IG investigation revealed that an aide to White House energy adviser Carol M. Browner who was making last-minute edits to the Interior report inserted language into the executive summary saying an independent seven-member panel had signed off on the recommendations in the document.

That implied that the experts had approved of Interior Secretary Ken Salazar’s proposal to ban deep-water drilling when they hadn’t even been consulted on the matter. Interior merely had asked them to peer-review a slate of drilling-safety recommendations.

“The White House edit of the original DOI draft executive summary led to the implication that the moratorium recommendation had been peer-reviewed by the experts,” concludes the IG report, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Times.

This is not the first time the Obama administration, particularly Mrs. Browner’s office, has come under fire for scientific statements related to the oil spill.

Last month, staff for the presidential oil spill commission said Mrs. Browner had mischaracterized a government analysis about the remains of the spill, saying most of the oil was “gone,” when the report said it could still be there.

The panel also criticized Mrs. Browner and Jane Lubchenco, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, for implying in public venues that peer review made these estimates more precise than they really were.

In October, Mr. Salazar announced an end to the moratorium more than a month before its planned expiration, saying stiffer new regulations on oil-spill prevention and containment had made deep-water drilling significantly safer than it was in April, when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded off the coast of Louisiana and killed 11 people, setting off the worst environmental disaster in the nation’s history.

Daily Benefactor News – 10,000 Refugees Flee Myanmar Post-Vote Fighting – More Articles

10,000 Refugees Flee Myanmar Post-Vote Fighting – Danbury News Times

Clashes between rebels and Myanmar government troops raged Monday at key border points a day after the country’s first election in two decades – polling that critics say will the cement the military-run government’s power.

At least 10 people were wounded in what was the first sign of post-election violence, and thousands of panicked refugees fled into neighboring Thailand. In the heaviest clashes, ethnic Karen rebels reportedly seized a police station and post office Sunday in the Myanmar frontier town of Myawaddy. Sporadic gun and mortar fire continued into Monday afternoon. More fighting broke further south for one hour Monday at the Three Pagodas Pass, said local Thai official Chamras Jungnoi, but there was no word on any casualties.

Groups from Myanmar’s ethnic minorities who make up some 40 percent of the population had warned in recent days that civil war could erupt if the military tries to impose its highly centralized constitution and deprive them of rights.

Myanmar’s secretive government has billed Sunday’s poll as a step toward democracy, but most observers have rejected it as a sham engineered to solidify military control. President Barack Obama called the vote “neither free nor fair.” He said the United States would continue a policy of both “pressure and engagement” in seeking change in Myanmar.

Still, some say having a parliament could provide an opening for moves toward democracy.

There is little doubt the junta-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party will emerge with an enormous share of the seats, despite widespread popular opposition to 48 years of military rule. It fielded 1,112 candidates for the 1,159 seats in the two-house national parliament and 14 regional parliaments. The largest anti-government party, the National Democratic Force, contested just 164 spots.

As early results trickled in, state media and the Election Commission reported that 40 junta-backed candidates had already won their races, including six seats won by recently retired military generals and ministers including Foreign Minister Nyan Win in constituencies that were uncontested.

No matter the election results, the constitution sets aside 25 percent of parliamentary seats for military appointees.

Detained Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, whose party won a landslide victory in the last elections in 1990 but was barred from taking office, had urged a boycott of the vote. Hundreds of potential opposition candidates were either in prison or, like Suu Kyi, under house arrest.

Although the balloting passed peacefully in most parts of the country, the clashes at the border highlighted the unstable situation in Myanmar.

Khin Ohmar, a spokeswoman for Burma Partnership, an umbrella group of Myanmar pro-democracy activists based in Thailand, said a faction of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army, seized the Myawaddy police station and post office Sunday. The group sides with the regime, but a faction has split off and along with other Karen rebels is fighting the central government.

Heavy fighting appeared to subside by Monday afternoon but sporadic shots sent refugees streaming across the Moei River into Thailand, said Samard Lyfar, the governor of Thailand’s Tak province on the border. Some bullets landed on the Thai side of the frontier.

He said five Thais and five Burmese were reported wounded.

There was no report on the fighting in Myanmar’s state-dominated media, and Myanmar government officials could not be reached for comment.

An Associated Press photographer at the border estimated about 5,000 refugees had entered makeshift camps in Mae Sot, Thailand, and more continued to come. Tens of thousands of ethnic Karen villagers who have fled decades of fighting in the border regions already shelter in refugees camps on the Thai side of the frontier.

Pakistan on the brink?

This should really have everyone’s attention. The Pakistani military has finally started to move against the Taliban fighters. But, as EdMorrissey who I feel is more qualified to speak on this than I am, points out it might be too little, too late. Be sure to read the whole thing.

The Pakistani Army has finally begun to act against the Taliban and its allies in Swat and Buner, but the effort may be too little, too late.  The government in Islamabad told Swat residents to flee, and more than 500,000 refugees may descend on the capital as the Army prepares to dislodge the extremists after an ill-advised truce allowed them to seize control and initiative.  But will the Army actually act on behalf of the tottering civilian government?

Video-Taliban guns down couple for “adultery”

Murderous swine. This is what Pakistan is facing, a possible takeover of these Shariasts. The menace e drove from Afghanistan is now trying to seize a new home, in Paskistan. And unless the Pakistani government wipes them out, instead of foolishly signing treaties with them, very bad days are ahead.

Time to freak out over Pakinstan’s nukes?

I wondered yesterday what America would do if the Taliban got close enough to threaten taking control of Pakistan’s nukes. Well that time is getting too close for comfort.

The Taliban takeover of Haripur would put the Taliban on the doorstep of Islamabad and would also put two major nuclear facilities at risk.

Haripur borders the Margala Hills, a region in the Islamabad Capital Territory. Haripur also borders the Punjab districts of Attock and Rawalpindi.

Attock hosts two major nuclear facilities in Pakistan: the Wah Cantonment Ordnance Complex and the Kamra (Minhas) Airbase. The Wah Cantonment Ordnance Complex host three sites where nuclear weapons and components are stored and assembled and aircraft and missiles are modified for use in nuclear attacks. The nearby Kamra Airbase is thought to host attack aircraft capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

Rawalpindi is the “garrison” city for Pakistan’s military. The city hosts the headquarters of the Army and Air Force, and several nuclear weapons research facilities are also located there.

There are lots of players here, India, obviously would be a target, as would our troops in Afghanistan. No doubt America would have to move to secure the nukes, and what if India decides to send its military in?

Hot Air has lots more on this and many more questions to ponder.

I remember reading last year somewhere that the Pentagon has emergency contingency plans to seize Pakistan’s nukes if things go haywire, but I’m naively hoping against hope that Zardari and the military leadership will voluntarily surrender them to keep them out of jihadi hands if they think they’re about to be overrun. Obama would have to guarantee Pakistan’s security against an Indian nuclear attack, though, and even then national pride might stop them from giving up the bomb — assuming, that is, that the leadership still has sufficient control over the military to get them to carry out an order like that. A horrifying possibility here is that there are Taliban sympathizers among the Pakistani troops safeguarding their nuclear arsenal. The more leverage the jihadis get, the greater the risk of defections.
