Local antiwar military veterans gathered outside New England’s largest mosque Saturday to show support for Muslims amid growing anti-Muslim sentiments that some believe have been stoked by the inflammatory tone of the presidential race.

The rally at the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center in Roxbury was organized by the Smedley D. Butler Brigade of Veterans for Peace and drew about 200 people.

“When you listen to what’s going on in presidential politics there is a lot of misinformation and some people are really misrepresenting what this religion is,” said Bob Funke, a US Army veteran and coordinator for the local veterans group. “They’re using it as a wedge issue and they’re scaring people. It’s the politics of fear.”

Members of the mosque said they were touched by the support.

“Some of the veterans know Muslims and they saw them as good people,” said Tina Serir Abdallah, 38, of Everett. “There’s 1.7 [billion] Muslims worldwide and the majority of us live in peace.”

Supporters of Veterans for Peace carried white and black flags featuring the group’s logo, a white dove set against a combat helmet, and displayed signs reading “Muslims are not our enemy.”

Speakers included leaders from veterans’ groups and Islamic organizations as well as Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans, who was last to address the crowd.

“We’re all Muslims deep down,” Evans said. “We all yearn for peace.”

Man Busted For Setting Houston Mosque Fire On Christmas Day Is A Devout Muslim

Man Charged With Setting Houston Mosque Fire Was A Devout Attendee – Houston Chronicle

.
……………………………

.
A Houston man has been arrested in connection with a suspected arson at a mosque on Christmas Day.

A spokeswoman for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives confirmed that the man was arrested early Wednesday, sometime after midnight, and appeared in court 7 a.m. Wednesday.

The suspect, Gary Nathaniel Moore, 37, of Houston, appeared in court at 7 a.m., spokeswoman Nicole Strong said.

According to a charging instrument released by the Harris County District Clerk, Moore told investigators at the scene that he has attended the mosque for five years, coming five times per day to pray seven days per week.

Moore told investigators he had been at the mosque earlier on Dec. 25 to pray, and had left at about 2 p.m. to go home. Moore told investigators he was the last person to leave the mosque and saw no smoke or other signs of fire when he left. He had returned to the scene after hearing about the fire from a friend.

Though the suspect said he was a regular at the mosque, MJ Khan, president of the Islamic Society of Greater Houston, which operates the mosque, said he was unfamiliar with Moore. “We are just looking into it ourselves,” he said Wednesday morning after learning of the arrest.

“We are really very surprised and saddened by this whole thing,” said Khan.

Using surveillance video from multiple businesses nearby, investigators were able to identify Moore, according to records. A search warrant of his home was conducted, in which investigators recovered a backpack and clothing that seemingly matched that which was seen in surveillance footage, as well as one half of a two-pack of charcoal lighter fluid bottles that seemed to match another lighter fluid bottle found inside the mosque.

Bond for Moore has been set at $100,000.

It took about 80 firefighters to put out the two-alarm blaze at the storefront mosque in Savoy Plaza, near Wilcrest Drive and West Bellfort.

Islamopologist Democrats Visit Mosque With Ties To Terrorism In Show Of Solidarity

Democrats Visit Mosque To Show Solidarity – Washington Examiner

.

.
Democratic lawmakers visited a mosque on Friday to show solidarity with Muslims in the wake of rising anti-Islamic rhetoric. They also showed resistance to any attempts by Republicans to restrict Syrian refugees from entering the country.

Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., attended prayer service at a Northern Virginia mosque on Friday. The visit was in response to try and tamp down rising anti-Islamic rhetoric, but comes at a time when Congress is beginning negotiations on how to fund the government.

Republicans have floated the idea of inserting language into the omnibus government spending package to block Syrian refugees. The bill must be passed by Dec. 11, when the government runs out of money, but Beyer pushed back against calls from Republicans to tighten refugee restrictions.

“It is really important to realize how tough it is to be one of those Americans admitted,” he told the Washington Examiner after a press conference at the mosque.

Beyer noted that the asylum application process typically takes about two years, and there are much easier ways for potential terrorists to enter the country. He did agree to reforms to the visa process, which in some cases has weak background checks.

But the Virginia lawmaker demurred when asked whether he would advocate shutting down the federal government if the omnibus funding package includes tougher restrictions on refugees.

“I think we should wait and see if there is that kind of language in the omnibus and what it looks like,” he said.

Outside groups are pushing to ensure that Democrats don’t waver when it comes to refugees, even in the face of a government shutdown.

Polling commissioned by the liberal group MoveOn.org recently released showed 59 percent of Americans want the U.S. to do more for refugees. The poll data was of 800 Americans and was completed about eight days after the Paris terror attacks.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations also joined with several refugee groups to lobby on the issue.

“We are pressing Congress not to include any Syrian refugee exclusion provisions in the omnibus bill,” said Robert McCaw, head of government affairs for CAIR, at the mosque.

Beyer said he coordinated the visit to the mosque because he wanted to help tamp down anti-Islamic rhetoric that has inflamed since the terrorist attack in Paris, and the California shootings this past week. Beyer said that he mainly reached out to his Democratic colleagues, however, and only informally to some Republicans.

The Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center recently had a bomb threat and had Molotov cocktails thrown into the parking lot, according to lawmakers attending the event.

The mosque has controversial ties to terrorists, as Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan was reportedly worshiping there. The mosque also previously had an imam, typically known as a prayer leader, named Anwar al-Awlaki that the government believes was a recruiter for terrorists.

Shaker El-Sayed, the imam that led prayers on Friday, called for an end to harmful anti-Islamic rhetoric and no retaliation from his congregation.

“No religion teaches terrorism,” he said.

Muslims Fly Nazi Flag Next To Mosque Near Jerusalem

Muslims Fly Nazi Flag Next To Mosque Near Jerusalem – Jihad Watch

……….

Harmonic convergence. “Arabs Fly Nazi Flag near Hevron,” by Gil Ronen for Israel National News, May 20 (thanks to Avi):

Hundreds of residents of Gush Etzion, south of Jerusalem, were astounded Monday morning to see an oversized Nazi flag flying next to a mosque in the Arab town of Beit Omar.

The residents notified the IDF.

A resident, Uri Arnon, told the Tazpit News Agency: “I felt we were going back 75 years, losing our hold on the land. The Arabs no longer feel the need to hide their murderous tendencies, announcing out loud that they wish to annihilate us.”

An IDF spokesman said that the flag was hung on an electrical line, and that they were waiting to professionals to come and remove it.

Egyptian Mosque Turned Into House Of Torture For Christians After Muslim Brotherhood Protest

Egyptian Mosque Turned Into House Of Torture For Christians After Muslim Brotherhood Protest – Fox News

Islamic hard-liners stormed a mosque in suburban Cairo, turning it into torture chamber for Christians who had been demonstrating against the ruling Muslim Brotherhood in the latest case of violent persecution that experts fear will only get worse.

Such stories have become increasingly common as tensions between Egypt’s Muslims and Copts mount, but in the latest case, mosque officials corroborated much of the account and even filed a police report. Demonstrators, some of whom were Muslim, say they were taken from the Muslim Brotherhood headquarters in suburban Cairo to a nearby mosque on Friday and tortured for hours by hard-line militia members.

They accompanied me to one of the mosques in the area and I discovered the mosque was being used to imprison demonstrators and torture them,” Amir Ayad, a Coptic who has been a vocal protester against the regime, told MidEast Christian News from a hospital bed.

Ayad said he was beaten for hours with sticks before being left for dead on a roadside. Amir’s brother, Ezzat Ayad, said he received an anonymous phone call at 3 a.m. Saturday, with the caller saying his brother had been found near death and had been taken to the ambulance.

“He underwent radiation treatment that proved that he suffered a fracture in the bottom of his skull, a fracture in his left arm, a bleeding in the right eye, and birdshot injuries,” Ezzat Ayad said.

Officials at the Bilal ibn Rabah Mosque said radical militias stormed the building, in the Cairo suburb of Moqattam, after Friday prayers.

“[We] deeply regret what has happened and apologize to the people of Moqattam,” mosque officials said in a statement, adding that “they had lost control over the mosque at the time.”

The statement also “denounced and condemned the violence and involving mosques in political conflicts.”

The latest crackdown is further confirmation that the Muslim Brotherhood’s most hard-line elements are consolidating control in Egypt, according to Shaul Gabbay, a professor of international studies at the University of Denver.

“It will only get worse,” said Gabbay. “This has been a longstanding conflict, but now that the Muslim Brotherhood is in power, it is moving forward to implement its ideology – which is that Christians are supposed to become Muslims.

“There is no longer anything to hold them back,” he continued. “The floodgates are open.”

Gabbay said the violent militias that allegedly tortured Ayad work hand-in-hand with police and may, in fact, be beyond the control of increasingly unpopular President Mohammed Morsi. While he may benefit from roving bands that attack demonstrators, they also undermine his claim of being a legitimate leader.

“Egyptian society is split over the Morsi regime, and it is not just a Coptic-Muslim split,” Gabbay said. “The less conservative elements of the Muslim society are increasingly uneasy with the Muslim Brotherhood. The Christian Copts are an easy target, but they are not alone in their mistrust of the Brotherhood.”

Experts agreed that the Copts, who comprise roughly 10 percent of the nation’s 83 million people, are not alone in their opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood, which took power in hotly contested elections following the 2011 ouster of longtime President Hosni Mubarak. Moderate Muslims and secular liberals are increasingly uncomfortable with the Islamization of the government.

Sheikh Ahmed Saber, a well-known imam and official in Egypt’s Ministry of Endowments, has blasted Morsi’s justice ministry for allowing persecution of Copts.

“All Egyptians in general are oppressed, but Christians are particularly oppressed, because they suffer double of what others suffer,” Saber told MCN.

Maybe Mayor Nanny ought to tackle this?

Or are his balls not as big as his severely overly-inflated ego?

A NYC mosque and Islamic community center is drawing a steady stream of cabs that clog streets and flout parking rules so their drivers can attend prayer services, according to local business owners and residents.

DNA (h/t Susan K) The numerous services each day at the Madina Masjid mosque and Islamic Center of America at the corner of East 11th Street and First Avenue is disrupting area business, with mostly cabbies filling metered spaces and parking in front of fire hydrants, in truck loading zones and in bus lanes, locals said.
