Jessica Ockman, a 33-year-old Louisiana woman was jailed Friday after she allegedly left her 20-month-old son alone in a car with a dead body while she took drugs in a nearby bathroom.
According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called after employees at a local gas station found Ockman passed out in a bathroom about 9:00 a.m.
Arriving officers discovered Ockman still passed out on the restroom floor with a lighter and a spoon next to her. A white box containing marijuana that Ockman had thrown away was found in a nearby trash can.
Officers walked out to Ockman’s vehicle, which was parked next to a gas pump, and discovered Ockman’s son inside along with the deceased body of 22-year-old Shelby Fleming.
Investigators have Fleming’s cause of death is still awaiting the outcome of toxicology tests. Ockman will not be charged in connection to Fleming’s death, which investigators say does not appear to be a result of foul play.
Detectives believe Ockman left the child alone with the body for at least an hour while she was in the bathroom getting high.
Ockman was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center and charged with child desertion, obstruction of justice, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was released Saturday without bond because the jail was overcrowded.
